The new waterline is active on East South Street, 6th Street SE Street and Old Avon Street. Work on this relocation will be complete with one, additional excavation and then paving over the new line. Vehicular traffic will be flagged as needed in the daytime.
A sanitary sewer pipe is being relocated with flagging of vehicular traffic at the Garrett Street/6th Street SE intersection. Vehicular travel will be restricted on two roads – 6th Street SE will be closed to northbound travel after Hinton Avenue before its connection with Garrett Street and Garrett Street will be closed to eastbound travel before 6th Street SE. Work will progress to the east along Garrett Street with additional traffic impacts that will be announced in future traffic alerts. Sewer service will not be interrupted.
To accommodate this utility work, segments of sidewalk and crosswalks will also be closed as work progresses down the alignments. No street will have both sides of the sidewalk closed at the same time. The northern sidewalk on Garrett Street will be closed with pedestrians directed to the southern sidewalk. The eastern sidewalk on 6th Street SE where it terminates at East South Street will be closed a few sidewalk segments earlier. The eastern and western crosswalks at the Garrett/6th Street intersection will be closed one at a time with pedestrians directed to use the other three, open crosswalks.
The eastern sidewalk along 9th/Avon Street will be closed between Levy Avenue and Graves Street to relocate private utility lines. Pedestrians will be directed to the mid-block crossing at Graves Street across 9th/Avon Street as well as the crosswalks at 9th/Avon/Levy/Garrett intersection. This closure is expected through the end of March 2022.
The southern sidewalk along Old Avon Street will be closed between Monticello Road and where it terminates near East South Street.
Monticello Road will be closed to vehicular traffic between Graves Street and Old Avon Street as a temporary wall is erected to prepare for the permanent wall/bridge construction. The northern sidewalk along Graves Street will be closed between Monticello Road and 9th/Avon Street.
Saturday, March 26th, travel along Water Street will be impacted during the day as the final bridge pier is demolished. Vehicular traffic under the bridge will be flagged. The northern sidewalk will be closed and pedestrians will be directed to the southern sidewalk.
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project area and access to private parcels will be accommodated.
Construction is being conducted by Caton Construction Group, Inc. for the City of Charlottesville’s Department of Public Works. The pedestrian pushbuttons at the 9th/Avon/Levy/Garrett intersection have been relocated to the large, wooden signal poles (NE, NW and SW corners) and an auxiliary wooden post with metal conduit (SE corner).
