posted in: Traffic Alert 0

To facilitate continued utility relocation activities and accommodate future traffic shifts, 9th/Avon Street will be reduced to two lanes to remove the final segments of the concrete median and to relocate a waterline between Garrett/Levy and Graves Street.  Work will begin with lane closures from the evening of Monday, September 27th to Thursday, September 30th between 7PM to 7AM.  Pavement patching will be conducted at the end of the week.  Construction vehicles will be entering/exiting the work zone within 9th/Avon Street on a limited basis and traffic will be monitored by onsite inspectors.  Nighttime lane closures are expected over the next several weeks as utility relocation continues.

Potholing within the roadway to confirm the location of public utilities will be conducted at select locations within 9th/Avon Street, Graves Street, Levy Avenue and Garrett Street beginning the evening of Monday, September 27th  to Tuesday, September 28th between 7PM to 7AM.

Work will begin on a duct bank along the corner of Garrett Street and Old Avon.  Lane closures and flagging will be used as needed starting Wednesday, September 29th and extending into next week until completion.  Please pay attention to construction signage and flaggers as the work zone shifts from Old Avon Street onto Garrett Street as work progresses.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project area and access to private parcels will be accommodated.

Construction is being conducted by Caton Construction Group, Inc. for the City of Charlottesville’s Department of Public Works. The contractor is undergrounding electrical as well as telecommunication lines to accommodate the future pedestrian underpass under 9th/Avon Street between South Street and Monticello Road and maintain service to neighboring parcels.

Work zone is posted at 25 MPH – please drive carefully with phones down.
