posted in: Traffic Alert 0

Public utility relocation from Graves Street is now moving to the left, northbound lane of 9th/Avon Street and will be moving across the 9th/Avon/Levy/Garrett intersection onto Garrett Street.  To shorten the duration of work, a steel plate will secure the excavation/stopping point and the left northbound lane will be closed between Graves Street and Levy/Garrett starting Friday, October 15th through the weekend.  Work will resume the evening of Sunday, October 17th to Thursday, October 21st between 7PM to 7AM with travel reduced to one lane in each direction on 9th/Avon Street between Graves Street and Levy/Garrett before moving across the intersection which will cause new traffic restrictions.   Pavement patching will be conducted at the end of the week during the day.  No service interruptions are expected.  Nighttime work is expected over the next several weeks as the waterline relocation continues onto Garrett Street and sanitary sewer work begins within the 9th/Avon/Garrett/Levy intersection.

Daytime work will begin on gas line relocation just south of the Old Avon and East South Street intersection before continuing down East South Street to Sixth Street SE.  Lane closures and flagging will be used as needed starting Wednesday, October 20th and extending into next week until completion.  Please pay attention to construction signage and flaggers as the work zone shifts from Old Avon Street onto East South Street as work progresses.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project area and access to private parcels will be accommodated.

Construction is being conducted by Caton Construction Group, Inc. for the City of Charlottesville’s Department of Public Works. The contractor is undergrounding electrical as well as telecommunication lines to accommodate the future pedestrian underpass under 9th/Avon Street between South Street and Monticello Road and maintain service to neighboring parcels.

Work zone is posted at 25 MPH – please drive carefully with phones down.
