The first major traffic shift on 9th/Avon is complete. All vehicular travel on 9th/Avon has been shifted to the existing two southbound lanes on the western bridge between East Market and Graves. Work has begun behind the concrete barrier to ready the bridge for demolition. The temporary signal required the relocation of the pedestrian pushbuttons at the 9th/Avon/Levy/Garrett intersection to the large, wooden signal poles (NE, NW and SW corners) and an auxiliary wooden post with metal conduit (SE corner).
Public utility relocation along Garrett Street between 9th/Avon and 6th Street SE within the on-street parking spaces continues for the week of November 22th – 24th. Work will be completed in the daytime and no service interruptions are expected. The southern sidewalk will be closed along Garrett Street between 9th/Avon and 6th Street SE and pedestrians will be redirected to the northern sidewalk. Flagging of traffic will occur as work moves closer to the Garrett/6th intersection.
New handholes, vaults and electrical wiring will be installed for the new conduit under Water Street between 4th Street SE and 10th Street NE the week of November 22th – 24th. Some work activities will be within the roadway requiring the eastbound lane to be restricted and flagging of traffic between 9AM and 5PM. Travel westbound will be prioritized to accommodate bus travel to the Transit Center.
The road closure of Monticello Road between Levy Avenue and Graves Street has been rescheduled to begin November 29th. Mastec, a subcontractor for Dominion Energy, will be excavating the intersection of Monticello Road/Graves Street to access the concrete duct bank and pull new lines to connect to the overhead poles. Workers and inspectors will ensure access is maintained to residents’ homes as needed. Service interruptions are not expected in this second phase of four to transfer power to the new lines.
Construction is being conducted by Caton Construction Group, Inc. for the City of Charlottesville’s Department of Public Works. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project area and access to private parcels will be accommodated.
