Public utility relocation continues – Garrett Street between 9th/Avon and 6th Street SE, 9th/Avon/Garrett/Levy intersection, Levy Avenue, East South Street, Graves Street between 9th/Avon and Monticello Road and Monticello Road from Graves Street to Old Avon.  Vehicular traffic will be flagged intermittently at these various locations in the daytime as connection points are unearthed, tested, disinfected and tied-in to activate the new waterline.  A sanitary sewer pipe will begin relocation in the coming weeks along the same alignment.

Night work is schedule for utility work between 7PM to 7AM starting on Sunday, January 23rd for two nights.  Work will be within the 9th/Avon/Garrett/Levy intersection and will close one northbound lane on 9th/Avon Street between that intersection and Graves Street.  Vehicular traffic will be flagged.

Waterline work will continue from East South Street onto Old Avon Street.  Work will be completed with flagging of vehicular traffic in the daytime and no service interruptions are expected.

To accommodate this utility work, segments of sidewalk and crosswalks will also be closed as work progresses down the alignment.  No street will have both sides of the sidewalk closed at the same time.  The southern sidewalk along Garrett Street between 6th Street SE and 9th/Avon Street will be closed with the detour route being the northern sidewalk.  The northern sidewalk along Garrett Street between 6th Street SE and 9th/Avon Street will be closed with the detour route being the southern sidewalk.  The eastern sidewalk on 6th Street SE where it terminates at East South Street will be closed a few sidewalk segments earlier. The northern crosswalk at the 9th/Avon/Garrett/Levy intersection will be closed with pedestrians directed to use the other three crosswalks. The eastern sidewalk on 9th/Avon Street between Levy Avenue and Graves Street will be closed with the detour route being the western sidewalk.  The eastern sidewalk on Monticello Road between Levy Avenue and Graves Street will be closed with the detour route being the western sidewalk.  The southern sidewalk along Graves Street between Monticello Road and Little Graves Street will be closed with the detour route being the northern sidewalk.

The southern sidewalk along Old Avon will be closed between Monticello Road and where it terminates near East South Street.

Monticello Road will be flagged intermittently between Graves Street and Old Avon Street as the crane removes full sections of the eastern bridge.

Investigation continues for the footings of the existing pedestrian tunnel to/from the Downtown Mall via the Pavilion on Water Street.  Pedestrian travel through the tunnel will be intermittently stopped for 15 minute intervals.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project area and access to private parcels will be accommodated.

Construction is being conducted by Caton Construction Group, Inc. for the City of Charlottesville’s Department of Public Works. The pedestrian pushbuttons at the 9th/Avon/Levy/Garrett intersection have been relocated to the large, wooden signal poles (NE, NW and SW corners) and an auxiliary wooden post with metal conduit (SE corner).

Work zone is posted at 25 MPH – please drive carefully with phones down.
