Waterline work will continue on East South Street, 6th Street SE Street and Old Avon Street. Work will be completed with flagging of vehicular traffic in the daytime. Work is expected to be complete in the next two weeks with service interruptions noted by door hangers at impacted properties.
A sanitary sewer pipe will begin relocation with flagging of vehicular traffic at the Garrett Street/6th Street SE intersection on Monday, March 7th. Vehicular travel will be restricted on two roads – 6th Street SE will be closed to northbound travel after Hinton Avenue before its connection with Garrett Street and Garrett Street will be closed to eastbound travel before 6th Street SE. Work will progress to the east along Garrett Street with additional traffic impacts that will be announced in future traffic alerts. Sewer service will not be interrupted.
To accommodate this utility work, segments of sidewalk and crosswalks will also be closed as work progresses down the alignments. No street will have both sides of the sidewalk closed at the same time. The northern sidewalk on Garrett Street will be closed with pedestrians directed to the southern sidewalk. The eastern sidewalk on 6th Street SE where it terminates at East South Street will be closed a few sidewalk segments earlier. The eastern and western crosswalks at the Garrett/6th Street intersection will be closed one at a time with pedestrians directed to use the other three, open crosswalks.
The eastern sidewalk along 9th/Avon Street will be closed between Levy Avenue and Graves Street to install new utility poles and relocation of private utility lines. Pedestrians will be directed to the mid-block crossing at Graves Street across 9th/Avon Street as well as the crosswalks at 9th/Avon/Levy/Garrett intersection. This closure is expected through the end of March 2022.
Vehicular traffic will be flagged on Graves Street between 9th/Avon Street and Monticello Road to also accommodate overhead utility relocation.
The southern sidewalk along Old Avon will be closed between Monticello Road and where it terminates near East South Street.
Monticello Road will be flagged intermittently between Graves Street and Old Avon Street as a temporary wall is erected to prepare for the permanent wall/bridge construction.
Old Avon Street vehicular traffic under the bridge will be detoured through the old parking lot so a work zone can be created for construction of the new piers.
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project area and access to private parcels will be accommodated.
Construction is being conducted by Caton Construction Group, Inc. for the City of Charlottesville’s Department of Public Works. The pedestrian pushbuttons at the 9th/Avon/Levy/Garrett intersection have been relocated to the large, wooden signal poles (NE, NW and SW corners) and an auxiliary wooden post with metal conduit (SE corner).Waterline utility relocation has been completed on Garrett Street, 9th/Avon Street and Graves Street.
